The Zibelemärit, which translates to "onion market" in Swiss German, is an annual folk festival and market that takes place in Bern, the capital city of Switzerland. This traditional event has a history that dates back several centuries.

The origins of the Zibelemärit can be traced back to the Middle Ages when farmers from the surrounding regions would come to Bern to sell their produce, particularly onions, during the end of November. Over time, the market expanded to include other vegetables, fruits, flowers, and various handicrafts. However, onions have remained a central focus of the event.

The Zibelemärit is not only about buying and selling onions but also includes a lively atmosphere with street vendors, local artisans, food stalls offering traditional Swiss cuisine, and entertainment such as music, dances, and parades. It's a vibrant celebration that attracts both locals and tourists alike.

One of the highlights of the Zibelemärit is the elaborate onion decorations and artwork. Vendors create intricate designs and sculptures using onions, showcasing their creativity and craftsmanship. Visitors can find onion braids, wreaths, and various onion-themed crafts throughout the market.

Additionally, traditional Swiss dishes, especially those incorporating onions like onion tarts and onion soup, are prominently featured during the event, allowing people to indulge in local culinary delights.

The Zibelemärit has evolved over the years, but it remains deeply rooted in Bernese culture and continues to be a cherished tradition, attracting thousands of visitors annually.

The market typically takes place on the fourth Monday of November at 6.00 and ends at 18.00, but first sales are already made at 4.00 in the early morning hours , transforming the streets of Bern into a bustling and colorful celebration of Swiss heritage and culinary delights.
