Switzerlands - Popular vote on 24th November 2024

Once again this month, Switzerland is holding a vote on the expansion of the motorway, as well as on issues related to tenancy law and health insurance.

Switzerland is voting for Biodiversity Initiative

On the 24th November 2024, Swiss citizens will vote on four national referendum issues:

  1. Expansion programme for the national motorway A significant investment is proposed to expand Swiss motorways to reduce traffic congestion, especially in bottleneck areas. The government plans to invest 4.9 billion Swiss francs in these upgrades.

  2. Tenancy Law: Subletting This reform aims to tighten rules around subletting by requiring tenants to get written consent from landlords and notify them of any changes. This measure is proposed to prevent abuse of subletting amid rising rents.

  3. Tenancy law termination: termination for personal use This law would allow landlords to terminate a rental contract if they urgently need the property for personal use, with simplified termination processes, particularly to address legal challenges in such cases.

  4. Health Insurance Act: standardised financing of benefits This measure would change how healthcare costs are divided between cantons, insurers, and patients. The goal is to shift some healthcare costs to the cantons, which the government argues may better control rising healthcare expenses.

These proposals highlight Swiss concerns around housing, infrastructure, and healthcare costs, issues that continue to shape Swiss policy and public opinion in 2024.
